New York Times Summer Academy, Alumni: 2022

I applied and was selected for the Investigative Journalism course at the renowned New York Times Summer Academy. A rigorous program shepherded by the Times for ambitious students to be enriched in journalism activities.
Take Away:

I was picked among 400 students to pose a question to the attending guest speaker series of New York Time journalists.

I conducted a final investigative journalism project about the disappearing natural green setting of the city with Central Park and Central Park tower as the focal point of the pitch.

Writing Club, Executive & Contest Coordinator: 2021 - present
Context:

As Contest Coordinator and Executive of the club, I am responsible for spearheading and creating club activities while finding eligible writing competitions at the provincial, national, and international writing levels with themes ranging from short stories, poetry and essays for the club to enter.
Take Away:

I formed a guest speaker event with a journalist from the Globe and Mail for the entire school as an opportunity to explore journalism.

I created a writing competition and a writing competition workshop for the entire school.

Colonel By News, Reporter: 2021 - present
Context:

Responsible for skillfully writing articles on various popular topics, including technology, food, and feature stories for the student body, ​using my platform to bring attention to underrepresented topics.

CAJ Mentorship Program, Mentee: 2021
Context:

I became the youngest mentee for the Canadian Association of Journalism Mentorship Program, a national mentorship for early career journalists undergoing journalism school and professional positions. The six-week mentorship entailed meetings between my mentor, Global News journalist Abigail Bimman.
Take Away:

Under my mentor’s tutelage, I conducted a feature story journalism project where I interviewed top officials at the Ottawa Food Bank and the Gloucester Food Bank to research the effects of COVID-19 on local food banks and their services.

Editor Service, Freelance: 2022
Context:

Launching an editor service, for a small fee, I would provide criticism to clients and their submitted work.

Self-featuring an advertisement on LinkedIn, many classmates partaking in my services, including emerging university students.

Feminism Club, Public Coordinator: 2020 - 2022
Context:

The feminism club boosted ideals of female empowerment, gender diversity, and LGBTQ+ issues. As public coordinator, I was responsible for involving the school's students in the feminism club activities, including spearheading a bake sale to raise donations for a women’s shelter.
Take Away:

The Foundr Project, Blog Editor: 2022
Context:

A subsidiary of the technological event of NetX, the Foundr Project was a technology and entrepreneur podcast for emerging companies and university students featuring top officials in the industries.
Take Away:

I wrote the description of each guest, briefly outlining their experience with writing was viewed by thousands of viewers each episode.

Republic of Childhood, Youth Advisory Council: 2021-2022
Context:

Inspired by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Youth Advisory Council is a dynamic group of young people, representing underrepresented minorities in the community, to effect outreach and writing endeavours in the community. I spearheaded book reviews of literature for Ottawa youth and marketing the counsel by writing publicizing articles for my school newspaper.
Take Away:

My article and book reviews were featured with my photograph and a short biography on the Ottawa Writer’s festival website.

Junior Achievement Company Program, Member of the Marketing Team: 2021
Context:

Junior Achievement Program is an entrepreneurial program for motivated students in grades 9-12 across Central Ontario that provides business and leadership experience. My batch of students formed our own company, Vesta. A member of Vesta’s marketing team, responsible for effectively designing advertisements and publicizing the company and our services.
Take Away:

In competition with other JA companies, Vesta ranked highly in earning customers and payments for our services due to my marketing effort.

Smile’s Charity, Member of the Awareness Committee: 2021-2022
Context:

A teenage-driven charity, the Smile's charity compiles donations to buy COVID supplies, clothing, and food for impoverished children and the elderly in Kenya. As a member of the Awareness Committee, I was responsible for spreading awareness of the charity and its initiatives to the public.
Take Away:

I wrote an article outlining the various services of the Smiles Initiative which were published in both my school and virtual school newspapers and was later featured by the Global Youth and News Media Organization - [details outlined in the project section].
